Statement
The figure that I paint is me, but does not represent me alone. She is a body, a woman, a child; a mass of bone, tissue, organs, and blood bound together to create a physical, living being. Within this ever changing complex mass lie the precious intricacies of her mind, swarming about in the endless chaos of her psyche. Together, mind and body function as a binary…twisting and turning around and through one another in complex states of harmony and discord. As I work, I find myself perplexed by such a dynamic mystery that makes a person human. This constant questioning feeds my desire to delve into the strangeness of the body and to interpret my discoveries through the language of art. Memories, fleeting imagery and sensations from my life have forever been ingrained into my mind, serving as inspiration for my work. It is within these memories that the bizarre nature of the mind reveals itself, acting as a vessel that contains the vast workings of thought, dreams, sensation and feeling. My chaotic patterns mirror these elements and become a sign for the strange and dynamic fragments of the human psyche. It is somewhere within these depths that we discover who we really are.
I am a storyteller. I am interested in who and what we are as humans, what it really means to be alive and how our perspective changes as we grow. I remember the world from multiple points of view, and create stories told by many characters. These stories are based on my life and those of my family, encompassing elements of raw vulnerability, strength and humor. Through the use of the projected image, I allow the audience to see into the numerous parts of the selves which make up a person's identity. This sense of multiplicity is jarringly present in my characters as the child, her family and ancestors, or her own alter-egos lurk within, having never left her. Her history is literally revealed. I am interested in how the physical and mental self, through the passing of time, function to form a convoluted dichotomy, pushing and pulling into and out of one another to form a creature that we know as human. It is within this creature that I find my inspiration.
